Tyres of landing aircraft deposit rubber on the surface of runways. These rubber deposits cause reduced friction values, leading to inadequate tyre contact. If this occurs, the runway may need to be taken off-line, leading to reduced airport efficiency. With increasing demand for air travel, the time for maintenance and runway cleaning is critical and precious. Our process allows time-efficient, environmentally friendly runway cleaning.

In order to ensure high environmental care and low water consumption, only clean potable water without chemical additives is used.


Traditional rubber removal techniques simply cannot compete with our 36,000psi (2,500bar) ultra high-pressure water jetting technology in terms of rubber removal effectiveness, speed and the quality of the surface left behind. Almost 100% of the rubber in the designated area is removed, providing the best possible friction values with no measurable damage to the grooved or un-grooved pavement surface.

Our UHP Water Jetting system, combined with an integrated extraction vacuum system, operates at any pressure between 800 and 2,750 bar. Our ultra high pressure water jets get deep into runway grooves, leaving the runway clean with an increase in friction values. Water jets allow for complete removal of rubber and debris, without damaging the runway.

Depending on the construction and condition of the runway, the right pressure is chosen in order to save the micro and macro texture of the surface. The significant advantage is gained by the combination of using low volumes of water (1litre/jet/min) and ultra high pressure.

Debris and dirty water resulting from the rubber removal operation are deposited into a tank integrated into the unit, with a separate tank for fresh water storage. Such arrangements allow maximum utilisation of valuable time on the runway.

When an aircraft lands on a runway the wheels are momentarily stationary since they haven’t been moving in mid-air, and as they touch the runway surface they drag under the full weight of the aircraft for a few instants before they start moving (spin-up time). During this time rubber polymerises and hardens to the runway surface. This unwanted rubber coating  affects the friction level of the runway and results in a reduction in braking and ground handling performance. If left untreated this could result in lateral slide of aircraft during takeoff and landing, and potentially runway overrun during landing procedures.

Naturally, rubber removal is incorporated into an airfield’s maintenance schedules, dependent on the takeoff and landing volumes. Bridgepoint Road Markings is involved with tyre rubber removal at both commercial and private airfields, including Belfast International Airport at Aldergrove, County Antrim.

Particularly in the airline industry, due to the huge cost of even minimal travel delays, we understand from our experience in this area that we must work in complete accordance with the airfield operator’s time constraints, and we must complete the removal work quickly, efficiently and safely.

Highway Markings introduced UHP Water Blasting to Ireland in 2005 as a road marking removal technique. It is now the preferred road marking removal technique by Local Authorities and the National Roads Authority.

UHP Water Blasting quickly removes markings faster and more thoroughly than abrasive methods – without damaging the pavement or asphalt. UHP Water blasting is fast and productive, and avoids exposing the environment to chemicals or contaminants. It also simplifies clean up, is dustless and leaves a clean surface.ean surface.

UHP Water Blasting uses water pressurised by an extremely powerful motor/pump to clean and remove markings from the pavement surface. These powerful motors can deliver pressure at the cleaning head of up to 40,000psi (2,700 bar).

The sheer force of the water delivered literally knocks the markings off the pavement. A vacuum recovery system removes all waste materials and surplus water leaving the road surface semi-dry.

Our UHP Water Blasting unit is mounted on a 26tonne truck and uses approx. 22 litres of water per minute (<5 gallons).

In the hands of our skilled and experienced operators, this process is capable of removing all kinds of road marking products without damaging the road surface. Our equipment is fitted with full dual controls thereby ensuring that all works are carried out in the same direction as the traffic flow. Our operators have received training from the UK Water Jetting Association. Operatives are not required within the ‘Works Area’. Positive control of traffic allows ‘sideways clearance’ to be at a minimum and, in most instances; a semi static traffic management system is used.

Surface re-texturing offers a quick and cost-effect ive way of maintaining skid-resistant road surfaces by restoring their micro and/or macro texture. The speed and efficiency of our technique significantly minimises works duration and, therefore traffic disruption.

Water Jetting is the latest technology in road surface re-texturing & bitumen removal. Excess bitumen is removed from the road surface to restore the skid resistance and texture depth to safe and desired levels, with directed water jets of 40,000 psi on a rotating head. A captive vacuum recovery system removes all waste materials and surplus water.

Over time road surfaces inevitably degrade due to the constant passage of traffic, and this degradation is often accelerated by weather conditions such as excessive summer heat causing bitumen to melt and rise to the surface (“melting tar”) or freezing and thawing cycles which can lead to the more serious problems of  potholes. Potholes will require spot repair, but the road surface itself may be retextured over a considerable stretch of highway to offer many benefits to both roads authorities and motorists.

Naturally the mechanical characteristics of the road surface such as friction and skid resistance will deteriorate with the surface condition, compromising road safety, so solely in the interest of reducing casualties roads authorities will want to address any issues promptly before surface skidding levels fall below accepted safety standards. This will result in increased road lifespan, minimised disruption to motorists and the cost savings translate directly to the tax payer.

Retexturing offers an environmentally friendly maintenance solution since only the surface aggregate is treated and existing road materials can largely be reused, reducing additional quarrying and transport overheads and waste. Research shows that the carbon footprint from several repeat retexturing treatments than from applying a complete single new layer of hot mix asphalt.

Road retexturing is a well proven and established process which is very cost-effective if performed in a timely fashion, and as an accredited Road Markings Contractor we have many years of experience in delivering road retexturing services on all classes of roads to both the Department of Regional Development (DRD) Road Service in Northern Ireland and the National Roads Authority (NRA) in the Irish Republic.
